Groupon

old-school Groupon

My Role

I was with Groupon from startup days (2009) through IPO in 2012 and beyond. I feel like I've seen a little bit of everything that can happen in the tech world while going through that experience. Let me give some tangible examples of what that means (to me anyway). I...

  • made it so you could print a Groupon

  • implemented the ability to gift a Groupon

  • wrote the feature that would direct you to the nearest active city based on the geolocation of your IP address

Later, when things started getting serious and we started having problems scaling our Rails monolith I...

  • Implemented a front-end based personalization layer so the server response could be CDN cached

  • Started optimizing all aspects of the front-end - rewriting the CSS and JS of the entire app over the course of a few months

I also helped kickstart and architect what would become the front-end microservice architecture that allowed Groupon to finally break up the monolith.

Then I joined the iOS team. I'm just trying to say that I did a bit of everything.
